Howell Laboratories, Inc. supporting relief efforts in HaitiHowell Laboratories, Inc. (HLI) is supporting the relief effort in Haiti with water treatment systems produced by its Howell Laboratories Division. The Howell Laboratories Division of HLI (www.howelllabs.com) manufactures shipboard fluid and environmental systems for the US Navy. On January 12, 2010, Howell technician Matt Smith was on sea trials with the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson enroute to its homeport of San Diego. Within hours of the earthquake in Haiti, the Vinson was diverted to Florida to pick up helicopters, personnel and support equipment, and then steamed to Haiti, arriving on January 15 to serve as the backbone of US relief efforts. Smith was onboard ship to do final checkout of the new Model 7060 Mk II Mixed Oxidant Electrolytic Disinfectant Generators (MEDGs) manufactured by Howell and recently installed as an upgrade to the Vinson’s potable water systems (identical units are being installed across the remainder of CVN 68 Class (10 ships total), and related units have been selected by the Navy for use on LPD 17 Class, LHD 8 and LHA 6 as well as the Navy’s newest surface combatant, DDG 1000).
Howell manufactures the MEDGs under license from MIOX Corporation. The MIOX system, based on a patented innovative technology, generates a dilute disinfectant on-site, using only salt, water, and electricity. On-site generation eliminates the need to store and transport hazardous chlorine gas or bulk bromine, removing the potential for accidents and protecting not only the sailors operating the water plant but also the rest of the ship’s crew from exposure to hazardous chlorine gas. Howell’s units utilize the MIOX system in a ‘ruggedized’ package that is fully compliant to the Navy’s rigorous shipboard environmental requirements, including shock, vibration, EMI and airborne noise. The USS Carl Vinson’s capability to produce over 400,000 gallons of drinking water a day is being fully utilized in the Haitian relief effort, and Smith remained with the ship through the first week of deployment. Howell Laboratories, Inc, located in Bridgton, Maine and a Navy supplier since 1964, is an Employee Owned Company. |
