USS New York is Christened

Sister ship Green Bay, LPD 20

On March 1, 2008, LPD 21, the third in the LPD 17 San Antonio class of “amphibious transport dock ships,” was christened in New Orleans. The ship is 684 feet long and 105 feet wide, and displaces 24,900 tons under full load. She is named New York, and included in her structure are 24 tons of steel salvaged from the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

On board are two mixed oxidant electrolytic disinfectant generators (MEDGs) made by Howell Labs under license from MIOX Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. These will provide clean, safe drinking water for the 8000 sailors and marines the ship is designed to accommodate.

Our Model 7060 MEDGs are standard equipment for water treatment on LPD 17 class ships, as well as on CVN 65 and CVN 71 class aircraft carriers and the new amphibious assault ships LHD 8 and LHA 6. The new DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyers will have Model 8060 MEDGs, a new design to serve smaller ships complement.
